Al Jazeera Explores Circumcision Rituals In Eastern Cape
Al Jazeera English was one of the sponsors of the 2012 Encounters South African International Documentary Festival. As part of the deal, Encounters hosted a pitching forum where African filmmakers could present their films to Al Jazeera English commissioning editors Diarmuid Jeffreys, Dominique Young and Jon Blair.
Ndiyindoda: I Am A Man is the first documentary pitched that day to screen on Al Jazeera, as part of People & Power.
Director Mayenzeke Baza investigates circumcision rituals in South Africa, where the ceremonial transition to manhood in Xhosa society has resulted in over 500 deaths since 2001. In December 2012, at least 15 boys died and 64 were hospitalised during the rituals.
